Some of you may have noticed the post from Markus Hanke announcing that I had joined the forum as a moderator. It may seem unusual for a moderator to be acquired from outwith a forum's current members - certainly I have not seen it before. However, Markus knows me from another place: time will make a judgement on his judgement. I'll do what I can to justify his confidence in me.

I am a geologist by original training and a survivor by profession. I am like the now extinct Smilodon, long in the tooth. I not only recall the moon landings, the Kennedy assassination(s) and the launch of sputnik, but the Franco-British invasion of Suez, the coronation of Elizabeth II and rationing.

My grasp of physics is hampered by my inadequate mathematics, but I do understand logic - the real kind, not the hand waving kind used by cranks - and I am a keen amateur, armchair astronomer.

I look forward to interesting times.

Welcome, Ophiolite! Thank you for taking on what often seems a thankless task, one that appears to be less pleasant than a vicious ice-cream headache.

    Dear Ophiolite,

I'd like to welcome you to the forum and thank you deeply for taking on the thankless role of moderator. We sure need an active one, that's for sure. I hope that you're the savior that some of us have been looking for, i.e. those of us who are only interested in discussing physics and not listening to the terrible things that others have to say because they don't understand what we've posted. I look forward to having you hear and talking to you about the wonderful world of physics.

How do you pronounce your name Ophiolite. Rhymes with Aphrodite, dynamite, petite or ....?
    Welcome. I don't recall Sputnick.

So, you seem to be a geology student, and an Engineer in the oil and gas field. How do you think about fracking? Also ever thought about inserting an r into your username? Oh-Free-Oh-Light?

I am a geology graduate from a long time ago, but have been revisiting and restudying aspects of geology for the last fifteen years as a hobby. I have worked in the oil and gas industry as a mudlogger, wellsite geologist, operations manager, software development manager, salesman, instructor, sales manager, training manager, product evaluation engineer, knowledge manager, and a few other roles, plus for a time I was outside the industry as the Production Director of a small manufacturing company.

I don't get the Ophriolite suggestion. Perhaps I am missing something.

Ah. That's elegant. However, there is not a rock suite called ophriolites.
