I'm not sure if this answers your question, but voltage (electromotive force) times current (amperes) equals power in watts (divide watts by 746 to get horsepower). You can use two of three given values (out of volts, amps and resistance) to find the one you don't have. There's a good story line that can help newbies remember it. Imagine and Indian (current) is on the hunt for Rabbit (resistance) and an Eagle (volts) is watching the Indian hunt the Rabbit. The Eagle over the Indian can help you find the Rabbit (resistance in ohms) or the Eagle over the Rabbit and help you find the Indian (we're doing division to find the missing value). Indian times the Rabbit equals the Eagle. I probably butchered the story, but you should be able to get the gist of it.
