ADMIN NOTE : Guys, what is it with this constant bitching, bickering, and getting personal with each other ?? Every thread I open here lately seems to start with genuine and good questions, but then rapidly deteriorates into personal insults and a flood of subsequent "reports" that clutter my personal email and - to be quite frank with everyone here - start to annoy the crap out of me. It feels to me like I have been tasked with watching over a group of unruly pre-school children who haven't yet learned how to communicate and get along with each other ! You people are grown-ups, and the majority of you have gone through third level education and earned your degrees - yet many of you seem to me to be incapable of even the basics of communication and common courtesy. This is unacceptable, and this state of affairs quite simply cannot continue. I and the other mods are not your nannies, and I have neither the time nor the inclination to teach you how to behave on public science forums, so going forward this is how it is going to be :

1. All personal insults, bitching, name-calling and getting personal with each other will immediately cease
2. Anyone found engaging in this type of behaviour will face a temporary suspension : three days on the first offence, a week on the second offence
3. Anyone not getting the message after his/her second suspension will be banned permanently. No one here is indispensable

All of the above actions are at the sole discretion of the moderator team; also, I do not care how qualified you are, how much you know about physics, or how many degrees you hold - if you can't behave in a public setting, then I don't want you here. This is a privately owned forum, not a democracy, so the mods make the call, and whether you like it or not it is ultimately the mods who decide who gets to be here and who doesn't. It is really sad that it takes someone who has never himself studied at university to show a bunch of degree holders how to communicate, but if that is what it takes then so be it. Some of the most knowledgeable people here are quite simply obnoxious, whereas some others who don't necessarily agree with mainstream physics go about it in a respectful and courteous manner. Funny, isn't it !!

Subsequent to this announcement, I want every single member of this forum to examine for him/herself your motives for being here - are you here to learn and discuss physics ? Or are you here to present personal opinions and then defend them tooth and nail by either turning discussions into personal attacks, or by ignoring all points made and going in circles ( i.e. trolling ) ? If it is the latter it will be for the best if you just simply leave and stop participating; there are other forums out there which are more suited for you. If you don't, then you are expected to behave civilly and lead proper discussions, and failure to do so will result in the mods going through the motions of "two strikes and out". There will be no exceptions, and neither will there be long-winded explanations - from now on, there will simply be moderators taking the actions they think are appropriate, regardless of any politics and public opinions.

This is a physics forum with focus on mainstream models and theories, not a place to proliferate and defend personal opinions, and most certainly not a place to battle out personal grudges and dislikes !!! There are ways to disagree without it becoming a mud fight, and there are ways to question theories and ideas without looking like a sad crank. Grow up people !

This was the final and official warning - going forward from here I will instruct all members of the moderator team to be more stringent and act on inappropriate behaviour. I am sorry it had to come to this, but the current state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue.
